1)    Welcome and introductions to new members; approve 2012 Minutes; revised agenda read and approved, updates on old business

Update on old business: Shoshanat Yisrael issue was resolved because the known title is used under RDA. Nusad Sefarad is status quo.

Religion genre titles: There was discussion about parashiyot shavua. It became Weekly Torah bulletins and was sent to Erica Treesh. It has not yet been approved and was the only of our terms to make it to the list.

There is a possibility to create our own vocabulary.

The Syriac Romanization table was approved.

The Encyclopedia of Jews in the Islamic World is now an approved source for choosing headings for persons in the Hebrew alphabet in LC-PCC PS 9.2.2.5.3

2)    NACO duplicates and record deletions after Joan’s retirement

Each cataloger will do the intellectual work and report to LC about the deletion. Questions and announcements should be made on the Heb-NACO listserv.

Benjamin Fryser will take over and will create guidelines. His email is bfrey@loc.gov.

Bibliographic record errors will also be handled by Benjamin but only if the errors are egregious.

3)    Romanization practices and rules

It is extra work to Romanize notes, all statements of responsibility for rabbinics (especially abbreviations) and contents notes. It may be a problem for systems to display contents or other non-roman fields if they are not paired. The Non-Latin guidelines are still in effect.

4)    RDA Hebraica issues

Detailed dates are when the date is presented with month/year or month/day/year. These are coded at DtSt e. The year is entered in the Date 1 and the month and date in Date 2. If the month is given in Hebrew, give the Gregorian equivalent in brackets. Instructions for dates in the Hebrew calendar are in 1.8.2. If the date is given in a non-Gregorian calendar, you are allowed to transcribe it in a parallel field.

Terms of honor (ha-Kohen, ha-Levi) have never fit into our cataloging rules. In AACR2 we applied rules for terms of nobility in the $c. A similar instruction will be found in an LC-PCC PS in RDA. We will continue the practice of adding this term in the $c.

Heidi wrote a proposal about collective titles for works of compilations. This will be sent to LC PSD, JSC and Paul Frank. The proposal is to continue current cataloging practices instead of using the conventional collective title. She will need examples in the letter. After discussion a decision was made to cite the need for this change for rabbinics and belles lettres.

5)    RDA e-forum

Vanessa Freedman’s group had an e-forum for RDA training. Each cataloger had a list of books and everyone reviewed each other’s records. Vanessa approached Heidi and Joan and requested a larger forum.

The e-forum currently running has 35 or more participants but only 8-10 are submitting records. The goal is to work through five books a week for seven weeks. Heidi and Joan may consider holding another e-forum in the future. They are using the e-forum to prepare examples for the new edition of the Hebraica Cataloging Manual.

6)    BIBCO funnel

Heidi sent a proposal to the Program for Cooperative Cataloging to create a Hebraica BIBCO funnel. The funnel would be open to Heb-NACO funnel member as well as PCC institution members who have no one to review their Hebrew.
