Periodicals on Halakhah
Do not include
Individual terms should not be developed for periodicals in each discipline.

Responsa
Responsa (Jewish law)

Responsa

sh 85113223

Responsa

--1040-1600

sh 85113225

Responsa

--1600-1800

sh 85113226

Responsa

--1800-1948

sh 85113227

Responsa

--1948-

sh 97004482
The term is already included in the law G/F list with the qualifier (Jewish law) to differentiate from other types of responsa. Cf. 150 Responsa, subdivided by appropriate period subdivisions, should be retained for critical works (and will require the addition of qualifier Jewish law). Currently collections of responsa limited to a period are assigned a chronological subdivision; however, G/F terms do not allow for chronological subdivision, so further consideration must be given to whether/how to retain the chronological subdivisions.

Defer: Rabbinical* literature

Rabbinical literature

sh 85110182

For “ Rabbinical literature,” and other terms in the hierarchy (e.g.,  Amoraic literature), should one assign as many levels of the hierarchy as pertain to the individual work, or only assign the most specific applicable term? Or should there only be a broad heading with upward references to cover the more specific G/Fs?

Not solely legal. Should be considered for the religion GF list, rather than the law GF list?

Note: For now, critical works continue to be assigned the topical heading subdivided by $x History and criticism

(e.g., 650 #0 Rabbinical literature $x History and criticism), but eventually, the coding 150/650 and enhancements to browse displays  will be sufficient to signify that a work is about the genre, and may make use of the subdivision obsolete.

*Crossover terms that should also be considered for religion G/F list

**Genre/Form Terms and Uniform Titles:

LC stakeholders were in general agreement that G/F terms should not be developed for specific named works (e.g., Mishnayot) since individual works are already identified by their respective uniform titles (e.g., Mishnah or Mishnah. Selections).  Note, however, that  per SHM H2190 Texts 3b,  there is a precedent for establishing  form headings coextensive with uniform titles for types of liturgical works and assigning them to individual specimens of  such works (e.g., 650 #0 Haggadot $v Texts). This practice will need to be reconsidered when developing the G/F list for religion.

Proposed Rabbinical Literature Hierarchy

Rabbinical literature (sh 85110182)

Amoraic literature

BT Rabbinical literature

UF Talmudic literature?

[Note: There is literary warrant for representing the phrase “Talmudic literature”; however, Talmud has the dual meaning of referring only to Gemara or to the whole Talmud (both Gemara and Mishnah).  Therefore, “Talmudic literature” could be established as a separate heading, resulting in a different hierarchy among the headings overall.]

Tannaitic literature

BT Rabbinical literature

UF Mishnaic literature?

Baraita (sh 90002498)

BT Rabbinical literature  (this is current BT, but could be Tannaitic literature, if established)

Midrash (sh 85085046)

BT Rabbinical literature

Halakhic Midrashim (sh 85058402)

(should be BT Midrash and BT Jewish law) (include in Law list)

Geonic literature (sh 85054171)

BT Rabbinical literature
